September 2013, Kansas City Public Schools hosted a neighborhood forum at Southwest High School. After a long public input process, the school board decided not to move forward with the sale of of the building for a proposed Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market.
Residents supported demotion of the building due to its condition. According to a July 2015 update from the KCPS Repurposing Initiative, the proposed 2015 demolition was delayed due to demolition at another site. A Request For Proposals (RFP) for the demolition services is scheduled to be posted in August, with demolition planned for Spring 2016. Before demolition begins, KCPS will conduct a public meeting with the contractor to discuss time frames and answer questions.
